Trail Description

UBC Malcolm Knapp Red Trail, A10, Blue Trail, and C Loop in Maple Ridge is a mellow forest loop that feels longer and wilder than the stats suggest. At 7.9 km with about 300 m of gain, it’s classed as easy, but the rolling hills and one steeper push to the cabin lookout keep it interesting. Expect about two and a half hours of steady walking through classic UBC Research Forest terrain, with a quiet, low-key vibe and lots of chances to slow down and just walk in the trees.

The loop weaves between older forest, newer regrowth, and stretches of logging road, so the feel changes often. You’ll cross small creeks and streams, pass a summer camp area with an old steam donkey, then climb toward a small cabin and picnic table that make a natural halfway break. Views from the lookout are partly blocked by trees, so this one is more about green corridors, fungi, moss, and birdlife than big mountain panoramas, with long, peaceful sections where you might not see anyone at all.

Recent hikers say the UBC Malcolm Knapp loop is great in dry weather but can get muddy, flooded, and slick in spots after rain, especially in low sections and newer forest where undergrowth is thick and visibility is poor. Many locals like starting on the east side and hiking counterclockwise to hit the cabin and avoid the worst wet areas. Trails are well marked, but downloading a map helps at the road crossings and junctions, and this is real wildlife country, with regular bear sightings and the possibility of cougars, so carry bear spray, make noise, and don’t leave food out at the lookout. Expect fewer bugs in shoulder seasons, more near the cabin in warmer months, and remember that dogs aren’t allowed in the UBC Research Forest.
