Trail Description
Malcolm Knapp Red and Yellow Loop Trail in Maple Ridge is a short, mellow forest walk that feels like a quick reset button. At 4.3 km with just 82 m of gain and a high point around 184 m, it’s more of a relaxed nature stroll than a grind, usually done in about an hour. Families, casual walkers, and runners all use this loop when they want something easy and close to town.
The loop winds through classic coastal forest on UBC’s Malcolm Knapp Research Forest lands, so expect wide, well-marked paths, tall trees, and a cool, shaded feel even on rainy or hot days. There’s not a big summit moment on the Red and Yellow Loop itself, but the calm, quiet woods and steady grades make it a low-stress way to get outside. Informational signs and seasonal story installations for kids add a bit of learning and fun along the way.
Right now, conditions can change quickly because of active research logging and trail work, and several routes in the Malcolm Knapp area have closures through at least June 30, 2024, so check current notices before you go. The trail can be a little muddy after rain, but it’s still very walkable and stays kid friendly year-round. Bears are around, with lots of scat reported, so bring the usual wildlife awareness and leave dogs at home, as they’re not allowed in this research forest.
