Trail Description

Kanaka Creek Canyon Trail in Maple Ridge is more of a relaxed walk than a hardcore hike, which is exactly why locals love it. At 3.7 km out and back with about 123 m of gain, it’s an easy route that usually takes just over an hour, with enough short hills to feel like you moved without wiping you out.

The path winds through a cool, shaded forest alongside Kanaka Creek, with several chances to peek into the canyon and listen to the water below. The highlight for many is reaching the fish hatchery, where you can check out the tanks, learn a bit, and let kids explore. It’s well maintained, quiet compared to busier Maple Ridge trails, and you can easily turn it into a longer jog or walk by doing a couple of laps.

Recent visitors describe Kanaka Creek Canyon Trail as accessible, family friendly, and good in most weather, even on chilly or hot days thanks to all the shade. Parts of the trail are occasionally closed for maintenance, so be ready to turn around a bit early or reroute, and don’t expect big viewpoints, just steady forest and creek scenery. The river spots near the day-use and barbecue areas are popular with families in warmer months, so go early on sunny weekends if you want it quieter and bring proper footwear for a few short, steeper sections that can get slick after rain.
