Trail Description
Kanaka Creek in Maple Ridge is one of those easy local loops you end up coming back to again and again. At just 2.3 km with about 92 m of gain, it’s more of a relaxed walk than a serious hike, but you still get moving, hit a few short hills, and score some solid creek and waterfall views in under an hour.
The Kanaka Creek loop winds through damp coastal forest, over sturdy bridges, and along the edge of the creek, with the sound of water following you most of the way. Views of the main waterfall are partly fenced and you can’t scramble right down to it from the trail, but there are several lookouts, cool lighting through the trees, and lots of birdsong, especially after rain. There are multiple side paths and connectors, so it’s easy to extend your walk or shorten it if you’ve got kids, older family, or just want a quick solo reset.
Right now, part of the loop is blocked around the halfway point for construction until about mid-November, so expect an out-and-back or a shortened loop rather than the full circuit. The trail itself is well marked, generally clean, and feels safe, but after heavy rain some rocks and slopes get slick, so wear shoes with grip and take your time on the steeper bits. It’s a year-round option, usually quiet compared to bigger Maple Ridge hikes, with bear warning signs posted, so bring a bell if that makes you more comfortable and enjoy this easy, low-stress outing along Kanaka Creek.
