Trail Description

Jacobs Lake in Maple Ridge, BC is one of those hikes that’s more about the destination than the journey. This 12.6 km out-and-back in the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest follows a wide forest service road with gentle grades, about 291 m of gain, and tops out around 384 m. It’s rated easy, usually done in just over 3 hours, and feels more like a long walk than a rugged mountain mission.

The route to Jacobs Lake is straightforward: follow the main road past the gate and just keep grinding steadily upward. You’ll pass a few viewpoints with glimpses of surrounding peaks and info signs that explain the forest and logging history, plus the quirky stump houses detour that’s worth the side trip. The payoff is the lake itself, a quiet, calm spot with a dock, good for a swim on warm days and a peaceful place to sit before turning around and heading back down.

Recent hikers describe Jacobs Lake as very easy, mostly road, and sometimes a bit boring if you’re looking for technical terrain, but excellent for running, fitness walking, or a low-stress outing near Maple Ridge. The lake has been warm enough for swimming, bugs have been minimal, and the road is clean and well maintained, though there’s limited shade on the main route so sun protection helps. Dogs are not allowed, parking is ample with pit toilets near the front office, and the trail is open year-round, but this is active bear country, so carry bear spray, make noise, and stay alert for fresh sign.
