Trail Description

Hector Ferguson Lake Trail in Maple Ridge is one of those routes that feels more like a full-on backcountry mission than a casual day hike. It’s listed around 29 km return with about 892 m of gain, but recent tracks from Gold Creek parking are closer to 18 km to the lake, plus a bit more if you push to the boulder field. Either way, expect a long, difficult out-and-back that will take most people well over 8 hours and run you right into the edge of your comfort zone.

The Hector Ferguson Lake Trail starts gently on the wide Gold Creek path, where the first stretch is easy walking and even bikeable to save some time. Past Half Moon Beach, things change fast: the trail narrows, hugs Gold Creek, and then forces a crossing before diving into dense forest, blowdown, and faint tread. Route-finding to the lake and up to the boulder field is the real challenge, but the payoff is a quiet alpine lake backed by rugged slopes and a better vantage if you bash up to the rocks.

Current reports from 2025 say the trail past Half Moon Beach is overgrown, with markers that are sparse and sometimes misleading, so you’ll be hunting flagging and often making your own line around deadfall. Offline maps are essential, and people are bringing foldable saws and headlamps for the inevitable slow, late return. Aim for July to September, start at dawn from Maple Ridge’s Golden Ears side, plan for creek levels, and treat Hector Ferguson Lake like a serious backcountry route, not just another Golden Ears stroll.
