Trail Description

Hayward Lake Railway Trail is an easy, flat out-and-back along the west side of Hayward Lake near Mission and Maple Ridge, not Maple Ridge proper, so double-check your driving directions. At 13.7 km with only about 146 m of gain, it’s more of a steady walk or run than a climb, and most people wrap it up in around three hours. If you want a longer, low-effort outing with water views and room to move, this is a solid option.

The trail itself is wide, mostly gravel, and follows old railway grades and power lines with regular peeks at Hayward Lake. You’ll pass a mix of open stretches with full sun and short forested sections that feel cooler and quieter, plus a few small beach access points where people hang out, swim, and let their dogs roam. It’s not a remote backcountry vibe; think multi-use corridor with lake scenery instead of a rugged mountain route.

Recent hikers on the Hayward Lake Railway Trail report lots of fresh loose, sharp rock on parts of the path, which can be slippery on the downhills, so wear decent shoes and watch your footing if you’re running. Expect off-leash dogs, smokers, and the odd party crowd at some of the little beaches, especially on weekends and summer evenings. This area is best from spring through fall, but always check BC Hydro’s Hayward Lake updates for any landslide closures or access changes before you go.
