Trail Description

Gold Creek Lookout in Golden Ears Provincial Park near Maple Ridge is a solid choice if you want a shorter hike that still feels like you’ve actually gone somewhere. The trail is about 7.7 km return with around 254 m of gain, so it’s rated easy on paper, but the terrain keeps it interesting. Plan on roughly two hours, a bit more if you poke around the creek or linger at the lookout.

The route follows forested trail with plenty of roots, rocks, and that classic Gold Creek roar nearby. Views are focused rather than constant: you get the creek crossings, some nice glimpses along the valley, and then the Gold Creek Lookout itself with its open view and sense of being up and away from the crowds. It’s usually quieter than the main Golden Ears attractions, with a few fungi and mushroom “bonus features” in the wetter months.

Recent hikers report washed-out sections and at least one or two missing bridges, so expect wet feet or rock-hopping when water levels are high, and bring supportive shoes plus poles if you have them. This trail can feel more rugged than its “easy” label, especially in winter or after heavy rain, when water runs right down parts of the path and turning around can be the smart call. Aim for April to November for simpler conditions, pack out all your garbage and toilet paper, and give yourself time to enjoy the creek and lookout instead of racing the clock.
