Trail Description

The East Canyon Trail to Lower Gold Creek Falls Loop in Maple Ridge is the classic “is this a hike or a walk?” kind of outing. At 5.8 km with just 165 m of gain, it’s an easy loop on paper and usually takes around an hour and a half, but one short connector section bumps the effort up a notch. Most people come for a relaxed walk in Golden Ears Provincial Park, river sounds in the background, and a solid waterfall payoff without a huge grind.

Starting from the Gold Creek parking lot, the East Canyon Trail side is a wide, rocky forest road with a steady but gentle incline, more of a walk than a technical trail. The loop drops down on the connector to Lower Gold Creek Falls, then follows the smooth, family‑friendly Lower Falls Trail back along the creek with views of the canyon, mossy forest, and the falls roaring below. On hot days you’ll spot a few brave swimmers dipping into icy pools, and on cooler days the forest feels quiet, with mushrooms, slugs, and damp moss everywhere.

Recent hikers agree: the loop is easy overall, but the connector between East Canyon and Lower Falls is steep, rough, and can feel closer to moderate, especially when wet. Expect roots, loose rock, and a short scramble that’s much nicer with proper hiking shoes and maybe poles; many people prefer doing the loop counter‑clockwise so the steep bit is mostly downhill. The Lower Falls section sees strollers and big crowds by late morning, so go early for parking and a quieter walk, bring bug spray in season, and plan for wet feet if it’s been raining—water can pool on East Canyon and around the beach and viewpoints.
