Trail Description

Alouette Lake Viewpoint Trail in Maple Ridge packs a surprising punch for a short hike. At 4.2 km out and back with about 240 m of gain, it’s rated moderate on paper, but many locals find it feels closer to the hard side because of the steep sections and narrow tread. Expect around an hour and a half on the trail if you’re moving at a steady, relaxed pace.

The trail climbs quickly through typical Golden Ears Provincial Park forest, with roots, rocks, and a few spots where the path hugs a slope and feels a bit exposed. You’ll get some peek-a-boo views on the way up, and at the Alouette Lake Viewpoint you’re looking over the valley with lake and mountain glimpses framed by trees, not a huge open panorama. Some hikers drop slightly off to the right near the top for a more open angle, but that area edges toward a cliff and demands extra care.

Recent hikers report debris on the route and a washed-out section just before the viewpoint from an October storm, so footing can be awkward and route-finding a bit confusing on the way down. Solid hiking boots or grippy trail runners are strongly recommended, and poles help a lot on the steeper grades and loose dirt. The Alouette Lake Viewpoint Trail is best in dry weather, typically late spring through early fall, since rain makes the already steep and narrow sections slick; in winter and shoulder seasons, check Golden Ears road and trail advisories before you go and be prepared to turn around if conditions feel sketchy.
