Trail Description
Whyte Lake via Nelson Creek Trail is actually on the West Vancouver mainland, just across from Bowen Island, and it feels like classic North Shore forest without a huge effort. This 5 km out-and-back climbs about 197 m, so you’ll get a bit of cardio at the start, then a mellow walk to a small, quiet lake with a dock. It usually takes around an hour and a half, making it an easy half-day outing close to the city.
The trail itself is well marked and straightforward, with most of the elevation packed into the first stretch from the parking area. You follow Nelson Creek through dense, green rainforest, crossing bridges and short boardwalks, with lots of shade and cool air even on hot days. Whyte Lake is more of a big pond than an alpine showstopper, but it’s a calm spot to sit on the dock, dip your feet, or even go for a quick swim if you don’t mind cooler water.
Recent hikers report minimal bugs, a few harmless garter snakes near the start, and some muddy or flooded patches after heavy rain, so waterproof shoes help. Several sections of the older boardwalk around Whyte Lake are damaged and coned off, and can be slippery when wet, so take care and don’t rely on doing the full loop. Parking at the main Westport Road lot is pricey, with reports of $6 an hour or more and even a car break-in, so many locals park for free on nearby residential streets like Cranley and walk in; aim for weekdays or early mornings for fewer crowds and an easier experience on Whyte Lake via Nelson Creek Trail.
