Trail Description

Mount Gardner – Killarney Lake on Bowen Island is a solid full-day outing that feels like a real mountain hike without a long drive from Vancouver. This 15.9 km loop climbs about 810 m to around 729 m, so expect a steady grind and a few steeper sections that will get your legs talking. It’s rated challenging for a reason, but the mix of forest, viewpoints, and the ferry adventure from Horseshoe Bay makes it a classic Bowen Island day trip.

From Snug Cove you wind past Killarney Lake and into the woods, where the trail switches between soft singletrack, old mountain bike lines, and rougher gravel or rocky sections. Most locals now recommend doing the Mount Gardner – Killarney Lake loop counterclockwise via the Skid trails, which gives a smoother climb and saves your knees on the descent. The north summit has the real payoff: big open rock slabs, helipad viewpoints, and wide views toward downtown Vancouver, UBC, Howe Sound, and the North Shore on a clear day, while the south side feels steeper and more rugged with a short scramble section and some ropes.

Recent hikers say the route is well used but not crowded, with some confusing junctions on the south loop, so download a map and keep an eye on signs. Poles and proper hiking shoes help a lot on the loose rock and steeper downhills, and in hot weather this Bowen Island trail can feel punishing, so bring at least a litre of water per person and top up at the refill station near the marina before you start. Expect mostly dry, rocky conditions in summer and shoulder season, limited cell service in spots, and give yourself 4–6 hours door-to-door from the ferry to enjoy the views and still make it back to Snug Cove without rushing.
