Trail Description

West Knob via Nelson Creek Trail is a tough, rewarding climb in the Cypress / West Vancouver area, with big views toward Howe Sound, Bowen Island, and the Tantalus Range if you hit it on a clear day. This 9.8 km out-and-back gains about 639 m and tops out around 733 m, so expect a steady grind rather than a casual stroll, usually taking around four hours. It’s a quieter alternative to the busier Baden Powell routes once you’re past Whyte Lake.

The hike starts from the Nelson Creek or Whyte Lake side and quickly feels wild, with the trail shadowing the creek and plenty of roots, rocks, and small washouts to keep your focus. Past Whyte Lake, traffic drops off and the route turns more technical and steeper, with a few spots where it’s easy to drift off the main line if you’re not watching the markers or an offline map. The actual West Knob viewpoint is partly treed in, but you still get solid sightlines over Howe Sound, Bowen Island, and the surrounding peaks, and the lake makes a great cool-down stop on the way back.

Recent reports say the trail is wet along the creek but usually not too muddy, and there’s been little to no snow or ice at the top, so spikes often aren’t needed in shoulder seasons, though conditions can change fast. Wayfinding near junctions toward Eagle Bluffs and Donut Rock can be confusing, so download a map and stay alert, especially where the trail is washed out. Expect paid parking at Nelson Canyon or Whyte Lake trailheads, roughly $4–5 per hour via app only, and keep bear aware; hikers have seen black bears within a kilometre of the summit. Late spring through fall is the sweet spot, with mushrooms and lush forest in wet months and clearer views on crisp, dry days.
