Trail Description

Mount Gardner via SW Ridge Trail is the punchy, no-nonsense way to tag the high point of Bowen Island. It’s listed as about 6 km out-and-back with 535 m of gain, but most locals’ watches are coming in closer to 8–9 km total, so plan for a solid half-day outing. Expect a steady grind, not a stroll, but you’re rewarded with big views over Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and the islands scattered through Howe Sound.

The SW Ridge Trail jumps uphill almost right away, winding through cool, shaded forest with a mix of roots, loose rock, and old creek beds underfoot. There are a few viewpoints on the way up, including a nice lookout before the true summit where you can catch your breath and scope the water and islands below. The official top of Mount Gardner has some industrial satellite gear that kills the vibe a bit, so most hikers linger at the helipad and earlier viewpoints where the views feel more open and wild.

Recent hikers say the trail is well marked, steep, and sustained, with poles very helpful on the climb and descent, especially on the loose sections. In dry conditions you can get away with regular hiking shoes, but in winter and early spring the upper sections can hold a lot of snow and ice, so spikes are strongly recommended. Aim for a clear day if you’re chasing views, watch for a few mosquitoes in warmer months, and arrive early since parking at the SW Ridge trailhead on Bowen Island is limited; some hikers skip the car stress and take the bus to the SW Express trailhead instead.
