Trail Description
Mount Artaban on Bowen Island is one of those hikes that feels like a mini coastal adventure, not just a trail. This 7.7 km out-and-back route climbs about 586 m to roughly 610 m, and most people need around three and a half hours, so expect a solid leg workout and a bit of route-finding, not a casual stroll.
The day starts right from the Fircom dock, usually reached by Mercury Transport’s water taxi from Horseshoe Bay, which already sets Mount Artaban apart from most Bowen Island hikes. The first stretch follows a road with steady elevation, then you duck into classic coastal forest with dust, roots, small rocks, and a few fallen trees before a short, easy class 3 scramble to the summit. Views up top are the payoff, with clear sightlines to the Lions Bay peaks and surrounding inlets when the weather cooperates, while the valleys and gullies along the way keep the terrain interesting.
Recent hikers report the trail as steep but not very technical, and generally easier than its “challenging” label suggests if you’re used to elevation. The route is only lightly marked and not perfectly maintained, so bring a map or GPS, and be ready for bugs, possible wasps, and some mud depending on recent weather. Snow can linger early in the season, which actually makes Mount Artaban feel pretty unique, but once things warm up the bugs ramp up fast, so many locals aim for spring or cooler shoulder-season days for the most comfortable trip.
