Trail Description

Killarney Lake on Bowen Island is a relaxed loop that feels more like a long walk in the woods than a grind of a hike. At 7.9 km with only about 184 m of gain and a max elevation around 82 m, it’s easy enough for families, casual walkers, and trail runners looking for something mellow that still feels like “real forest.” Expect around two hours at a comfortable pace, more if you stop for photos or a lakeside picnic.

The Killarney Lake loop winds through classic coastal forest with big old trees, soft dirt underfoot, and stretches of boardwalk over boggy wetlands that give the place a slightly mystical vibe on cloudy or rainy days. The lake itself is calm and quiet rather than dramatic, with a few rocky spots and picnic areas where you can sit, listen for woodpeckers, and watch the light on the water. Trails are well marked from the Bowen Island visitor centre, and you can branch off toward Bridal Veil Falls and the fish ladder if you want to tack on a little extra exploring.

Recent hikers report the trail as mostly flat, easy, and well maintained, with just enough roots, rocks, and occasional mud to remind you you’re not in a city park. It drains well, so even after rain it’s usually just “a bit soft” rather than a slog, and it’s a good choice on cooler or lightly rainy days thanks to the tree cover. Dogs are allowed on leash, you might spot the odd snake in warmer months, and many people pair the Killarney Lake hike with a walk-on ferry trip and a coffee or iced mocha in Snug Cove to round out a low-stress Bowen Island day.
