Trail Description

Handloggers Trail – North Summit Trail – Skid Trail is one of the better full-value loops on Bowen Island if you’re after a solid workout and big views. The loop clocks in around 9.5 km with roughly 680–800 m of gain, topping out near 721 m on Mount Gardner’s north summit, and most hikers are out for 3–4.5 hours depending on breaks and route choices. It’s rated challenging for good reason: long, steep grinds, technical footing, and a bit of scrambling thrown in.

The loop links Handloggers, North Summit Trail, and Skid Trail into a varied circuit through classic coastal forest, bike trails, and rocky viewpoints. Many locals park near Killarney Lake or the mailboxes and head up “Fun Trail” to connect with Skid Trail, then hike counterclockwise so the steeper side is on the way up and the descent is more forgiving. Expect roots, loose dirt, and one short scramble with a rope that feels secure and non-exposed, leading to platforms and open rock with wide views over Gibsons, Howe Sound, and West Vancouver on a clear day.

Right now, hikers report dry, steep sections that can be slippery, lots of intersecting bike and hiking trails, and distances feeling closer to 11–12.5 km than the posted 9.5 km. Download an offline map like AllTrails before you go; flagging and markers can be confusing and have led people briefly off-route, especially 2–3 km below the summit and around downed trees. Parking is limited near the trailheads, poles are a big help on the descents, and there’s little shade at the top, so bring water, hat, and sunscreen. The Handloggers Trail – North Summit Trail – Skid Trail loop is generally snow-free in shoulder seasons most years, but always check recent reports and stay wildlife-aware after a recent mountain lion sighting near the north summit.
