Trail Description

Grafton Road: Snug Cove to Tunstall Bay on Bowen Island is a solid choice if you want a longer, low-elevation outing without committing to a steep mountain grind. The route follows the main road across the island for 15.6 km out and back, with about 340 m of total elevation gain and a max altitude around 171 m, so the challenge comes more from distance than from climbing. Most people finish it in just under four hours at a steady walking pace.

The walk starts near the ferry at Snug Cove and gradually leaves the busier village area behind as you head toward the quieter west side of Bowen Island. You’ll pass a mix of forested stretches, rural properties, and occasional views toward the water, especially as you get closer to Tunstall Bay. It’s not a wilderness singletrack; think more of a road walk that gives you a good feel for the island’s character and everyday life.

Grafton Road is popular with both walkers and cyclists, so stay alert for bikes, especially on curves and downhills. The surface is mostly paved with some shoulder, but it can be narrow in spots, so bright clothing is smart, and good shoes are a must for the distance. Conditions are generally best from April through October, though it’s walkable year-round if you’re ready for rain and cooler temps; just check the ferry schedule, pack water and snacks, and plan enough time to get back to Snug Cove without rushing.
