Trail Description
Eagle Bluffs via Baden Powell Trail is actually on the North Shore above Horseshoe Bay, not Bowen Island, and it’s one of the tougher ways to reach this famous viewpoint. This out-and-back route is about 10–12 km with around 980 m of gain, and it feels every bit of “difficult,” especially in the final stretch. Traffic is way lighter than the Cypress Mountain routes, so you get a quieter, more rugged experience with the same huge views at the top.
The Baden Powell section starts off fairly tame on good singletrack, then slowly ramps up with roots, rocks, and a few short steep pitches under solid tree cover. As you get higher, the trail turns into mixed rock and then a full-on boulder and scree field, with some scrambling and a rope assist in one section. The payoff at Eagle Bluffs is a wide-open lookout with big views over Howe Sound, Bowen Island, Vancouver, and on a clear day out toward Mount Baker, plus a quieter first viewpoint if you stop short of the main bluff.
Recent hikers say the trail is well marked but steeper and longer than the 10 km stat suggests, and the last 1–1.5 km is a grind with lots of loose rock and ankle-twister terrain. In dry late spring to fall conditions it’s a demanding but fun workout; in rain, snow, or ice it gets sketchy fast, with multiple slips and falls reported, so save it for a dry day or bring microspikes in shoulder season. Expect fallen trees to climb over or detour around, no reliable water, limited parking near the trailhead, and a tough descent that some people avoid by continuing to Cypress rather than downclimbing the boulder field.
