Trail Description

Mount Klaudt is one of those Harrison hikes you do for the workout and the winter adventure, not for an easy stroll. This 7.9 km out-and-back trail climbs about 522 m to roughly 1,388 m, and most people need just over 3 hours, but it feels tougher thanks to the steep pitches and rougher sections. It’s rated challenging for good reason, with a mix of old ski tracks, forest road, and less-defined trail.

The route up Mount Klaudt starts out fairly straightforward on old groomed tracks, then gradually turns into more of a grind as you gain elevation. In clear conditions you’ll get partial views toward Harrison Lake and the surrounding Chehalis area, but the summit outlook is mostly filtered through trees, so manage expectations on the scenery. If you’re chasing big open panoramas, nearby Cartmel is the better viewpoint, but Klaudt still delivers that quiet, remote feel once you’re up high.

Recent hikers around Harrison report that Mount Klaudt is overgrown in spots, with multiple turnoffs and a few sections of bushwhacking, so an offline map is a must. The trail is marked with big blue squares on trees, but they can be easy to miss in snow or low light, and people have underestimated the distance, thinking it was a loop when it’s actually about 7 km each way. In winter and spring, expect icy access roads, lingering snow patches, and at least one very steep, slippery section near the end where snowshoes or microspikes are smart; late spring to early fall brings easier driving and less snow, but more brush and route-finding.
