Trail Description

Bear Mountain in Harrison Hot Springs is one of those hikes you either love for the grind or swear off halfway up. This 18.2 km out-and-back route climbs about 1129 m to just over 1000 m, and it feels every bit of its “difficult” rating. Expect a long, steady push that takes most hikers around seven hours and rewards persistence more than it does early-mile scenery.

The first 6 km are on a decommissioned logging road: wide, steady, and honestly pretty dull, with overgrown brush, bugs, and stinging nettles if you’re in shorts or starting early with dew. Things improve after the junction near the lake as Bear Mountain shifts into a more classic Harrison forest trail, with a softer tread, meandering path, and most of the big elevation already behind you. Along the way you get a couple of waterfalls, scattered viewpoints over Harrison Lake, and on a clear day the summit and helicopter pad area deliver wide open views that finally make the slog feel worthwhile.

Recent hikers report the trail as easy to follow but often overgrown in sections, so long pants or gaiters are smart, and bug spray is basically mandatory in season. Snow can linger from the lake upward in late fall through spring, with spikes helpful but not always essential, and the road-style grade makes it popular with strong trail runners. Expect a steady uphill grind rather than technical moves, bring poles for the descent, and plan a stop in Harrison Hot Springs afterward to recover; this is a tough, quiet route that rewards fitness and patience more than casual sightseeing.
