Trail Description
Gambier Lake Trail on Gambier Island is a solid challenge, not a casual stroll. At 13.5 km with around 806 m of elevation gain and a top elevation near 510 m, it earns its “challenging” rating and usually takes just over 5 hours, even for reasonably fit hikers. If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to the busier Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound hikes, this one feels a lot more remote and wild.
The trail climbs steadily from the coast into the forested interior of Gambier Island, with long stretches of classic coastal BC forest, roots, and some steeper sections that will get your legs working. Views are mostly about the forest, creeks, and the calm atmosphere rather than big open vistas, with Gambier Lake itself as the main payoff. The lake is a peaceful spot to stop for lunch, soak your feet, and enjoy the sense of being far from the city even though you’re just a short ferry ride away.
Recent hikers describe Gambier Lake Trail as rugged and lightly trafficked, so expect uneven footing, mud in wet weather, and some overgrown sections depending on the season. Good footwear, plenty of water, and a GPS track are smart, since signage can be limited and you won’t see many other people. Spring through fall is the best window, with winter bringing slippery conditions and potential snow at higher points, and always remember that access to Gambier Island itself depends on water taxis or BC Ferries, so plan your timing carefully.
