“Recent reports online indicate winter conditions have arrived with snow and icy, slippery patches starting right from the parking lot and along the steeper sections. Microspikes and hiking poles are strongly recommended to navigate the frosty terrain safely. Remember to bring your BC Parks day pass downloaded ahead of time since there is no cell service on site.”

Trail Description
Nestled within Joffre Lakes Provincial Park near Pemberton, British Columbia, the Joffre Lakes Trail is a world-class outdoor destination famous for its striking turquoise waters and dramatic mountain scenery. This 7.24 km out-and-back route guides hikers through rich coastal forest ecosystems, passing rushing glacial streams and vibrant subalpine flora. Rising 425 meters in elevation against a backdrop of towering alpine peaks and ancient icefields, the trail delivers a classic Pacific Northwest wilderness experience that draws adventurers from around the globe.
The hike offers an engaging progression across varied terrain, starting on well-maintained dirt paths and wooden boardwalks before transitioning into more rugged, root-filled sections and rocky boulder scrambles. Along the way, trekkers encounter three stunning glacial bodies of water—Lower, Middle, and Upper Joffre Lakes—each presenting increasingly spectacular perspectives of Matier Glacier. Key highlights along the trail include a roaring waterfall, panoramic mountain viewpoints, and frequent sightings of friendly local birdlife like Canada Jays.
With an average completion time of 3 to 3.5 hours, proper preparation is key to a safe trek. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear with good traction to navigate slick rocks and mud, carry extra warm layers for shifting high-elevation temperatures, and ensure they have adequate food and water. The prime season for hiking runs from late spring through early autumn, though visitors should check current park regulations regarding day-use permits, camping reservations, and the unverified dog policy before heading out.
