“Recent reports online indicate significant snow and ice near the summit with soft, melting conditions in the afternoon causing post-holing and turn-arounds. While the FSR to the trailhead is in great shape with no driving issues, hikers note that microspikes, crampons, and an ice axe are essential for safety higher up. Be sure to check Mosaic's website for gate hours, as weekday closures occur at 4 PM.”

Trail Description

Mount Arrowsmith via Judges Route offers one of the most rewarding and challenging day hikes in the Alberni-Clayoquot F region of British Columbia. Ascending through dense coastal forest into rugged alpine terrain, this trail provides hikers with dramatic mountain landscapes and sweeping panoramic vistas. As the highest peak in Southern Vancouver Island, Mount Arrowsmith stands out for its steep, unyielding topography and diverse forest ecosystems, making it a bucket-list destination for experienced outdoor enthusiasts looking to push their limits.

Stretching 7.08 km out and back, the route demands continuous effort as it gains 984 m of elevation over a relatively short distance. Traversing a rough surface of loose dirt, roots, and steep rocky scrambles, the trail pushes above the tree line to expose breathtaking, unobstructed views of the surrounding valleys, neighboring peaks, and distant ocean waters. Navigating the exposed ridgeline to the summit provides an exhilarating high-alpine experience that highlights the absolute best of Vancouver Island's wild geography.

Due to the relentless incline and technical terrain, proper preparation is essential; sturdy hiking boots, plentiful water, and trekking poles are strongly recommended for this standard day hike. The route is best tackled during the late spring through early autumn months when the higher elevations are clear of winter snowpack. Dogs are permitted on the trail but must remain on a leash at all times to protect fragile alpine vegetation and ensure safety along narrow, exposed sections.
