Trail Description
Thunderbird Ridge on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver is one of those short hikes that feels bigger than the stats suggest. It’s only about 6 km out and back with around 277 m of gain, but the mix of roots, rocks, and light scrambling keeps you on your toes. You get that real North Shore feel without committing to an all‑day grind.
The trail starts from the Grouse Mountain alpine area, then works its way along a narrow, sometimes overgrown ridge with views opening up toward Crown, Goat, and the surrounding peaks. Expect a steep, rocky start off the Alpine Trail, a few hands-on sections, and some tight singletrack where shrubs will brush your legs. On a clear day the Thunderbird Ridge lookout delivers wide-open mountain views and a surprisingly peaceful vibe once you’re away from the main Grouse crowds.
Recent hikers report the difficulty feels closer to moderate, especially in snow or ice, so spikes or snowshoes are smart from late fall through spring, and the winter route can differ from summer lines. In summer the trail is dry, easy to follow, and even has a “blueberry fiesta” in the alpine, which also means active black bears; several people have had close but calm encounters, so carry bear spray, make noise, and avoid hiking alone at dusk. Dogs aren’t allowed, you’ll need a Grouse Mountain Skyride ticket and to pay for parking at the base, and long pants are a good idea unless you enjoy brush scraping your shins.
