Trail Description
Saint Mark’s Summit in West Vancouver is one of those classic North Shore hikes that locals keep going back to, and visitors can’t believe is only a short drive from downtown. This 10 km out-and-back from Cypress Mountain climbs about 570 m to around 1350 m, and most people clock it in roughly 3.5–4 hours. It’s rated moderate, but recent reports make it clear that in wet, muddy, or snowy conditions it can feel like a step up, especially for newer hikers.
The first half of Saint Mark’s Summit is a straightforward cruise on wide, well-marked trails through forest, with some long, easy grades. After that, the route steepens into switchbacks, roots, rocks, and a few short scrambly bits where you’ll use your hands for balance, then finishes with a muddier, rougher final kilometre. On a clear day, the payoff is huge: wide-open views over Howe Sound, Bowen Island, and the Coast Mountains that make all those roots and stairs worth it, and even on foggy days the moody forest and snow can be pretty fun if you’re prepared.
Right now, hikers are reporting lots of mud, slick roots, icy or frozen steps in spots, and snow building from about halfway up, with fog at the summit on many days and the odd “no view” outing. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended, along with warm layers, gloves, and traction like microspikes or light crampons once the freeze-thaw cycle kicks in. Expect crowds on any decent-weather day at Saint Mark’s Summit, plan extra time for slower travel in the mud and snow, and try to hit a clear window if the view is a priority; late spring to early fall is the most reliable season, but winter ascents can be great if you’re equipped for snow and cold.
