Trail Description
Mount Harvey in West Vancouver is a serious grind with a huge payoff. This out-and-back trail climbs roughly 1400 m over about 11–16 km round trip, depending where you park, and it feels steep almost the entire way. Strong hikers call it a favourite; newer hikers often call it the hardest thing they have ever done.
The route starts on a road approach, then dives into the forest on the Mount Harvey trail and turns sharply uphill. The middle section is the real leg burner, with relentless elevation on loose dirt and roots, then it opens onto a ridge with big views over Howe Sound, the Lions, and the North Shore peaks. The final push to the 1640 m summit has some light scrambling and exposure, but nothing technical if you take your time and watch your footing.
Recent hikers report a very steep, slippery descent on dry days, so poles and shoes with good grip make a huge difference. Expect lingering snow on the upper third in spring and early summer, cooler temps and wind at the top, and very limited parking near the trailhead, especially on weekends and long weekends. Bring more water than you think you need, consider bear bells or spray, start early for both shade and parking, and know that clouds can wipe out the views, so Mount Harvey is best on a clear-weather window.
