Trail Description
Mount Fromme via Grouse Mountain Highway in North Vancouver is a long grind with a big payoff. This 18 km out-and-back route climbs about 847 m to a summit around 1184 m, and while the stats say under 4 hours, most hikers take closer to 5–6 hours round trip. It’s a solid challenge rather than a scramble, better suited to people who are comfortable with sustained climbing and a full day out.
The day starts on the Grouse Mountain Highway, a wide gravel service road that steadily gains elevation with no real tricks, just relentless uphill. After about 6.5 km you leave the road and head up Bill’s Trail, where things feel more like classic North Vancouver: roots, tighter singletrack, and a final push to the Mount Fromme viewpoints. The first lookout gives a clean view toward the North Shore and nearby peaks, and if you’ve got a bit more in the tank, a short but rougher stretch leads to a rocky second viewpoint with a different angle toward Grouse and the western ranges.
Recent hikers report some lingering snow higher up, but it’s currently patchy enough that most aren’t bothering with microspikes, just carrying them as backup. Expect the service road to be straightforward but exposed, and the upper trail to be wetter, with occasional mud or slush depending on recent weather. The main Fromme Mountain parking lot near the trailhead has a three-hour limit, which isn’t realistic for this route, so plan for transit, rideshare, or being dropped off if you’re tackling Mount Fromme via Grouse Mountain Highway in peak season from late spring through fall.
