Trail Description
MacKay Creek Trail in North Vancouver is one of those routes that looks harmless on the map and then absolutely kicks your legs on the climb. At just 3.9 km out and back with around 586 m of gain, it’s short, steep, and rated extreme for good reason. Most hikers use it as a serious workout alternative to the Grouse Grind or BCMC, and it usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.
The trail itself is rooty, slippery in spots, and pretty relentless once you leave the easier Powerline or Baden Powell approach. Views are limited in the trees, so the payoff is more about the effort and the history than big vistas, with the old cabin remains near the top being the main highlight. MacKay Creek Trail tops out around 855 m and connects to Skyline Trail, but the Skyline section is currently chewed up by construction and not a great descent option.
Recent hikers report blowdowns, one stream crossing with some minor slides, and sections that feel rough and unmaintained, so this is better suited to at least intermediate hikers comfortable with steep, technical terrain. Orange blazes help, but the lower junction sign for MacKay Creek Trail is easy to miss, especially if you’re coming in from the Grouse Grind or Baden Powell, so bring a map or GPS track. Best season is roughly May to November when snow is gone and footing is more predictable; expect mud after rain, and skip Skyline on the way down until the construction mess is cleaned up.
