Trail Description

Kennedy Falls in North Vancouver is one of those North Shore hikes that looks mellow on paper but still leaves you tired and happy. The trail is about 9.8 km out and back with roughly 445 m of gain, and while it’s rated moderate, the challenge comes more from roots, mud, and water than from steep climbing. You’re heading through classic Fromme forest to a powerful waterfall, with a bonus stop at the massive Big Cedar along the way.

The Kennedy Falls trail starts from the Mount Fromme parking area and quickly pulls you into deep, mossy forest with a mix of ups and downs that never feel brutal but do add up over the distance. Expect a lot of roots, rocks, and small stream crossings, plus the odd log balance and short, steeper sections near the falls. Views are mostly trees, mushrooms, and clear pools until you reach the falls themselves, which drop into bright blue-green water and make a solid payoff for the time on your feet.

Recent hikers report the trail as often muddy, with many wet, slippery stream crossings and even standing water in sections, especially in fall, winter, and after rain. Waterproof boots, extra socks, and good grip are key, and don’t wear shoes you care about keeping clean. The trail is generally well marked once you’re on it, but the actual Kennedy Falls trailhead can be confusing from the Mount Fromme lot, which also fills quickly in summer and on weekends. Expect variable weather, fog, and the odd hail or snow squall outside summer; late spring through early fall usually offers the most straightforward conditions, but this North Vancouver classic is hikeable year-round if you’re prepared to get wet.
