Trail Description

Kallahne Creek Trail is a steep, quiet grind above Lions Bay in West Vancouver, best suited to strong, experienced hikers who like a bit of suffering with their views. The route is about 9 km out and back with roughly 958 m of climbing, topping out around 1060 m, and most people need close to 5 hours to get it done. It’s rated very difficult for a reason: big elevation, rough sections, and not much in the way of easy cruising.

The first kilometre follows the well-signed Howe Sound Crest Trail from the parking area, winding through open forest with a surprisingly wide view over Howe Sound under the old telegraph pole. After that, Kallahne Creek Trail leaves the crowds behind and follows old, overgrown logging roads toward Lost Lake, feeling more remote and a bit wild as you gain height. Views are limited through the trees until you reach the top near the small shelter, where you get a partial lookout that’s decent but not the main reason to come; the appeal here is the workout and the solitude.

Recent reports on Kallahne Creek Trail mention rough, brushy sections and fading flagging in spots, so be ready to pay attention to route-finding and expect slow going. This area in West Vancouver holds snow and ice well into spring, and the steep grade can be slick after rain, so good boots, poles, and extra layers are smart year-round. Aim for late spring to fall for the best experience, start early to avoid running out of daylight on the descent, and treat this as a serious mountain hike, not a casual stroll to a viewpoint.
