Trail Description

Grouse Mountain Highway in North Vancouver is the long, grinding way up the front range, and it feels every bit of its 23.8 km and 760 m of gain. It’s a wide gravel service road, not a technical singletrack, but the steady grade and length make it a solid challenge for strong hikers, runners, and especially cyclists. Think of it as the Grouse Grind’s tougher, longer cousin, stretched out into an all‑day out-and-back that usually takes close to seven hours on foot.

The route starts from the Mount Fromme side and works its way up through classic North Shore forest, with tall evergreens and plenty of shade in the lower half. As you climb higher toward the Peak Chalet on Grouse Mountain, the trees thin, the road gets rougher with loose rock, and views start opening up to Vancouver, Burrard Inlet, and the surrounding North Shore peaks. It’s not a route you take for quiet wilderness; it’s more about the grind, the elevation, and the payoff of big-city-and-mountain views at the top.

Recent riders describe Grouse Mountain Highway as a “Grouse Grind for bikes”: a moderate but relentless incline that feels like 100% up on the way out and 100% down on the return. The descent is fast and fun, but the loose gravel means you still need to stay alert. This trail in North Vancouver is best from May to October when snow is off the upper section, and it can be hot and exposed near the top on sunny days, so bring plenty of water. Expect limited parking at the Fromme Mountain lot with time restrictions, and if you’re biking, plan to lock up at the Peak Chalet bike rack once you hit the dismount sign.
