Trail Description

Grouse Grind Trail in North Vancouver is the classic “see what you’re made of” hike. It’s only 1.9 km, but with about 780 m of gain straight up the face of Grouse Mountain, it feels more like an hour-plus leg workout than a casual forest stroll. Expect an extreme climb, heavy on effort and light on distance, with most people taking between 1 hour and 2 hours to reach the top.

The route is basically a giant outdoor stair machine: well-built wooden steps, rock sections, and a constant uphill grade. You’re in thick, green forest most of the way, with quarter-mark signs that are either motivating or soul-crushing, depending on how you’re feeling. The big payoff is at the top by the Grouse Mountain chalet, where you get wide views over Vancouver, the inlet, and the surrounding mountains before riding the gondola back down.

Right now, the Grouse Grind Trail is in good shape: well maintained, clearly marked, and busy but usually manageable outside weekend peaks. Expect wet and muddy patches after rain, and from fall into spring be ready for snow and compact ice near the upper quarter; microspikes are smart to pack once temps drop. Bring plenty of water, take breaks so you’re not pushing your heart too hard, and remember there’s no downhill hiking allowed, so you’ll need to pay for the Skyride down from Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver.
