Trail Description

Goat Mountain in North Vancouver starts right from the Peak Chalet at Grouse Mountain, which means you’re already high up before the real work begins. From there, this 7.2 km out-and-back feels like a solid, moderate hike with a sting in the tail rather than an all-day sufferfest. Most locals do Goat Mountain as an add-on after the Grouse Grind or BCMC, but if you ride the gondola up, you’re looking at roughly 2.5–4 hours return from the chalet, plus time to hang out on the summit.

The trail rolls along classic North Shore terrain at first: roots, rocks, and short ups and downs with glimpses of the city, the Lions, and out toward Crown Mountain. The final push up Goat Mountain is where it gets serious, with steep dirt, rock, and a couple of chain sections that feel exposed at first glance but are actually quite manageable and not true “no fall” terrain. The reward is a broad, open summit with big 360-degree views and lots of room to spread out, snack, and watch the clouds move over the North Shore peaks.

Recent reports say the Goat Mountain trail is often wet, muddy, and rocky, with lingering snow in shady sections well into the shoulder seasons, so waterproof shoes are smart and crampons or microspikes are a good idea when snow is around. Chains help on the steeper bits, especially on the way down if things are slick. Expect fallen trees here and there, a slightly overgrown feel in spots, and very little shade on the summit, so bring sunscreen. Best season for Goat Mountain from Grouse is usually July to October, but always check current conditions and trail status before you head up, as the Grind and surrounding routes do close for maintenance and weather.
