Trail Description
Cypress Falls and Whyte Lake in West Vancouver is a solid half-day outing if you want a real hike without committing to a full mountain slog. The 10.6 km out-and-back route is rated moderate, with about 394 m of gain up to around 310 m, and most people take just over 3 hours. It links two local favourites: the deep, mossy canyon and waterfalls of Cypress Falls Park and the calm, swimmable waters of Whyte Lake.
The trail starts from Cypress Falls, where you can check out the lower and upper falls before heading up toward Whyte Lake on a mix of forest trail and the Nelson Creek fire access road. The forest is dense and shaded, so it stays cool on hot days, with plenty of running water along the way for dogs and a few rougher, rooty stretches to keep it interesting. Whyte Lake itself is a small, quiet spot that warms up enough for a quick swim, with just enough elevation and distance to feel like you earned it.
Recent hikers say the route is enjoyable but poorly marked in spots, so this is not ideal for first-timers without a downloaded map; it’s surprisingly easy to wander off the main line. Expect some mud and wet sections after rain, and plan around parking, as the pay lot near Cypress Falls reportedly only allows two hours, which is not enough for most people to finish the full Cypress Falls and Whyte Lake route. The trail is hikeable year-round, but traction and navigation matter more in winter, while summer brings drier footing, cooler forest walking, and the best conditions for a dip in the lake.
