Trail Description

The Capilano Canyon and Upper Capilano Pacific Trail Loop in North Vancouver is one of the easiest ways to feel “out there” without leaving the city. This 5.8 km loop has about 227 m of gain, tops out around 160 m, and usually takes just under 2 hours, so it’s very doable for visiting families, new hikers, and anyone wanting a low-stress walk with real scenery. You get big canyon views, river noise, and a solid workout without feeling like you’ve signed up for a sufferfest.

Starting near Cleveland Dam, you’ll get instant payoff with views over Capilano Lake and down into the canyon before dropping into the forest. The Capilano Canyon and Upper Capilano Pacific Trail Loop mixes wide gravel paths, mellow rolling sections, and a bunch of stair stretches that wake up your legs but stay non-technical. Expect shaded forest, multiple bridge crossings, and plenty of viewpoints over the gorge and Capilano River, plus a stop at the Capilano River Hatchery, which is a hit with kids and out-of-towners.

Recent hikers report the trail as dry and well-maintained, with minimal mud even after rain, though it can be wet and windy near the dam. The loop is dog-friendly, has free parking by the dam and free entry to the hatchery, but the last stair section on the way back catches people off guard, so proper footwear is smart. The route is open year-round and stays cool under the trees in summer; in peak season and on sunny weekends, go early to beat the crowds and, if you want to add a paid attraction, the nearby Capilano Suspension Bridge is an easy extra stop.
