Trail Description

Cleveland Dam and Second Canyon Viewpoint Loop in North Vancouver packs a lot into 3.5 km without beating you up. You get big dam and mountain views right at the start, a wander through Capilano River Regional Park, and you’re back at the car in about an hour and a bit. It’s an easy loop with about 179 m of gain, popular with locals who want a quick nature fix without leaving the city.

The loop drops from Cleveland Dam down into the forest on wide, well-built paths, then follows the Capilano River past the Capilano River Hatchery before looping back via Second Canyon Viewpoint. Most of the “wow” views are at the dam, along the river, and around the hatchery, where you can stop and check out the salmon displays. Expect some stair sections and a short climb in the middle and at the end, but nothing technical, and there are lots of side trails if you feel like exploring a bit more.

Recent hikers describe the Cleveland Dam and Second Canyon Viewpoint Loop as easy, well marked, and well maintained, with good toilets and generally lots of parking on regular days, but it can be very busy and competitive for spots on sunny weekends and holidays. The trail surface is usually in great shape, though it can be wet, icy, or slippery in winter and after rain, so wear decent shoes and take care on the stairs. Dogs are welcome on leash, it’s kid friendly, and the loop works year-round, but construction and temporary closures around the hatchery and river viewpoints do pop up, so be ready to follow detours.
