Trail Description

Jenkins Brook Falls and Brighton Beach Lookout in North Vancouver is one of those routes that looks manageable on paper and then quickly reminds you who’s boss. At 13.7 km with about 810 m of gain, it’s a challenging out-and-back that feels a lot more committing than the stats suggest, thanks to exposure, rough tread, and route-finding. If you’re experienced, comfortable with risk, and craving a rugged adventure above Indian Arm, this trail delivers a serious day out.

The route follows the old Elsay Lake Trail, which is unsanctioned and unmaintained, so expect narrow singletrack, washouts, and sections that tilt toward steep drops. You’ll pass Jenkins Brook Falls, a small cascade that’s nicest in late spring when the flow is up, then carry on toward the Brighton Beach Lookout for big views over Indian Arm and the tiny waterfront community below. Many locals say Cascade Bluff, which starts from the same trailhead, offers even better views, but if you commit to Jenkins Brook Falls and Brighton Beach Lookout, you’re signing up for a wilder, more exposed line.

Current reports are clear: this is not for casual hikers or folks uncomfortable with heights. The old ropes along the route are frayed and should be treated as backup at best, not life support, and there are multiple unbridged creek crossings plus sections where a missed step could mean a nasty fall. Aim for July to October for drier ground, download the corrected AllTrails map so you stay just outside the private property at Brighton Beach, and resist any urge to shortcut, because you’ll end up on someone’s land and likely get called out on it.
