Trail Description
Bowen Lookout Trail in West Vancouver is one of those quick wins in Cypress Provincial Park: low effort, high payoff, and easy to fit in after work or between plans. At 4.7 km out and back with about 152 m of gain, most people wrap it up in around an hour to an hour and a half, but it still feels like a real mountain walk. You start from the Cypress Mountain ski area and end up staring straight out at Bowen Island, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast.
The first stretch toward Yew Lake is mostly flat on smooth gravel, with spur viewpoints, benches, and picnic tables if you want a slow start. From there, the route passes through the short Old Growth Loop, where you walk under some seriously big trees before the trail tips uphill toward Bowen Lookout. Almost all the climbing is in the final 800 m or so, with loose gravel, dusty switchbacks, and a steeper grade, but it’s still solidly in “easy hike” territory, and the bench and wide views at the lookout make that last push feel worth it.
Right now the trail is well maintained with a few slippery, loose sections near the top, so proper footwear is a good idea, and in shoulder season microspikes or poles help on icy patches or light snow. Dogs are allowed on leash, but note that the Yew Lake section has environmental restrictions, so start on the alternate approach if you’ve got a pup. Bowen Lookout Trail in West Vancouver is popular but rarely feels chaotic, works in most seasons outside of major snow dumps, and is a smart choice for sunsets, quick morning laps, or a relaxed intro hike with visiting friends—just bring water, bug spray in summer, and pack out every scrap of trash.
