Trail Description
The Baden Powell Trail via Hyannis to Mount Seymour is a solid North Vancouver grind if you like forest, roots, and a bit of sweat without committing your whole day. This 8.5 km out-and-back section of the Baden Powell clocks around 411 m of gain, usually taking just under 3 hours, and stays at a modest max altitude of roughly 431 m. It’s rated moderate, and that feels accurate: enough work to feel like a real hike, but not a sufferfest.
From Hyannis Drive, the Baden Powell eases you in with a classic North Shore mix of rough singletrack, roots, and steady uphill through dense second-growth forest. The highlight is the Seymour Grind, a rocky, steeper stretch that’s the most fun and technical part of the route, bringing that old-school North Vancouver hiking vibe. After the Mushroom Trail junction toward Mount Seymour Road, things mellow out into wider gravel-style paths and sparser trees, less exciting but easy cruising before you hit the parking lot turnaround.
The Baden Powell Trail via Hyannis to Mount Seymour is open year-round and tends to be well marked, but expect mud, slick roots, and standing water after rain or in winter. You’ll share about half the route with mountain bikers coming out of the CMHC bike park, so keep an ear out and step aside when needed. Most locals agree the first half to and including the Seymour Grind is the best part; if you want a more engaging loop, check out the Seymour Grind and Good Sir Martin Trail option. Dogs are allowed on leash, and this one works well as a shoulder-season or after-work hike when you want forest time without chasing big views.
