Trail Description
South Needle in North Vancouver is one of those North Shore hikes that looks manageable on a map and then completely humbles you in real life. The stats say about 14.8 km out and back with roughly 1,400 m of gain to around 1,147 m, but most locals’ watches are logging closer to 16–20 km once you factor in the ridge. It’s rated very difficult for a reason: long, steep, and mentally tiring with all the ups and downs.
The approach from Lynn Valley Headwaters up Lynn Peak is straightforward but not exactly exciting, with limited views and a lot of forest slog. The character changes once you push past South Lynn Peak and onto the ridge toward South Needle: more technical, more rugged, and way more interesting. The payoff comes at the summit, with big views over Lynn Valley, Seymour Valley, and across to Crown and Mount Seymour, even if Middle Needle blocks a true 360.
Current reports all say the same thing: this route is longer, steeper, and more demanding than the AllTrails stats suggest. Expect rocky, rooty, muddy sections, fallen trees, slippery moss, and a ridge that rolls up and down five or more times, which feels brutal on the way back. The trail past South Lynn Peak can be poorly marked in spots, especially in the dark or shoulder season, so start early, carry a GPS track, skip this one in fading light, and bring more water than you think you’ll need; there’s basically nothing to refill from until you’re back low on Hydraulic or in the valley. Prime season is late spring to early fall when snow and ice are gone, but even then it’s a serious North Vancouver grind best saved for strong, experienced hikers.
