Trail Description
Seymour Grind Loop in North Vancouver is a solid go-to if you want a proper workout without committing your whole day. This 7.2 km loop climbs about 346 m to around 431 m, and most people wrap it up in about two to two and a half hours. It’s rated moderate, but feels easier if you’re used to North Shore trails, and it’s almost fully shaded, so it’s a good call on drizzly or hot days.
Most hikers tackle Seymour Grind Loop clockwise from Old Buck, starting with a rolling warm-up on Bridle Trail before hitting the rough, rocky Seymour Grind section of the Baden Powell. Expect roots, rocks, short steep pitches, and a few gnarly bits near the top, then a smooth, easy cruise back down on Old Buck or the winding Good Sir Martin. There are no big viewpoints, but the forest is the star here: tall trees, creeks, and that damp North Shore feel, with the occasional need to share sections with mountain bikers.
Right now, reviews say conditions are generally good, but you should plan for mud, wet sections, and spots where the trail turns into shallow streams after rain. Clockwise is strongly recommended; it keeps the steeper, more technical bits on the climb and gives you a safer, easier descent. Wear proper hiking boots with grip, download a map since signage can be confusing with all the side trails like Slippery Salamander, and don’t expect facilities at the trailhead. Seymour Grind Loop is hikeable year-round, but in fall and winter it gets wetter and slicker, so take your time on the rocks and roots.
