Trail Description
Capilano Canyon Loop via Rabbit Lane Trail is a solid little North Vancouver outing when you want real forest without committing your whole day. At about 5.3 km with 221 m of gain, it’s rated easy and usually takes around 1 hour 45 minutes, but most locals treat it as a relaxed walk rather than a grind. You’re close to the city the whole time, so don’t expect silence or deep backcountry vibes, but it’s a great way to stretch the legs and get a quick hit of West Coast rainforest.
The loop winds through Capilano River Regional Park on a mix of wide gravel paths and narrower forest trails, with short ups and downs that keep it interesting but not punishing. You’ll get a mix of canyon glimpses, mossy trees, wooden bridges, and occasional views toward Cleveland Dam and Capilano Lake, depending on current closures. Some folks extend the route to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park via the road, but even just sticking to the Capilano Canyon Loop via Rabbit Lane Trail gives you that classic North Vancouver rainforest feel in a compact package.
Recent hikers say the route feels easier than the “moderate” label you sometimes see, though the web of intersecting paths can be confusing, so having a map app handy helps avoid wrong turns. Sections near Cleveland Dam and the Capilano Pacific Trail see periodic closures and detours, but the main loop described here has generally been open, with a staircase workaround when needed. Trails are well maintained, mostly shaded, and usually not too muddy, but there are some stairs, roots, and short steeper bits where light hiking shoes help. Expect dogs, families, and other walkers rather than solitude, and keep your eyes open for wildlife; bears do wander through now and then, even this close to town.
