Trail Description

Mystery Lake and Mystery Peak Loop on Mount Seymour in North Vancouver is one of those short hikes that still feels like a full day out. At 4.3 km with about 255 m of gain, it’s officially “moderate,” but most reasonably active hikers will find it very doable in around an hour and forty minutes. You get a classic North Shore mix of forest, rock, and alpine lake without committing to a huge mission.

The loop starts out on a mix of gravel service road and rooty, rocky trail, winding through dense greenery and past creeks before popping you out at clear, cold Mystery Lake. On warm days it’s busy with swimmers and families sprawled on the rocks, and kids usually love scrambling around and hunting for salamanders along the shoreline. From there, continuing up toward Mystery Peak gives you more elevation, a bit of a grind on the road section, and on a clear day, wide views over the North Shore mountains; on foggy days it can feel surprisingly wild and moody.

Conditions on the Mystery Lake and Mystery Peak Loop change fast with the seasons. Late spring through early fall, expect mud, rocks, and roots, plus bugs that can range from barely noticeable to very annoying, so bring spray and decent footwear. From late fall into spring, snow can linger well past the lake and up toward Mystery Peak and Pump Peak, turning parts of the loop into a slippery mess where spikes, extra layers, and even a change of clothes are smart; some hikers end up bum-sliding and come out soaked. Check Mount Seymour’s seasonal closure info, aim for summer if you’re not into snow travel, and always bring water and basic mountain gear rather than counting on others to bail you out.
