Trail Description
Mount Fromme via St. Georges Trail in North Vancouver is a solid grind with a real summit feel, without needing to drive deep into the backcountry. The route is about 10.5–12 km out and back, with roughly 900 m of gain, and most hikers take around 5 hours. It’s rated difficult for a reason: this one is steep, rooty, and slippery in spots, but gives you that classic North Shore workout and a quiet alternative to Grouse.
The hike starts from the top of St. Georges in a residential area, then dives straight into forest, crossing old roads and intersecting with mountain bike trails. Expect soft dirt, lots of roots, a few small stream crossings, and some short scrambling sections near the top. Views are mostly in the trees until you break out near the summit of Mount Fromme, where on a clear day you can see across to Grouse Mountain, Lynn Peak, and the Seymour range, and even better views if you poke over to the second summit.
Recent hikers on Mount Fromme via St. Georges Trail report well-marked orange flagging but say it’s still easy to drift off route, so downloading a map is smart. The trail is often muddy with very slippery roots, especially after rain, and the final stretch can have lingering snow into spring but usually doesn’t require spikes; sturdy footwear, poles, and bug spray help a lot. Expect fog or full cloud to block views fairly often, limited early-morning transit, no washrooms, and residential street parking that can be under construction or restricted, so give yourself extra time and be ready for a tough, technical climb and a careful descent.
