Trail Description

Mount Fromme via Cascades Trail in North Vancouver is a solid choice if you like your hikes a bit rough around the edges. This 10.6 km out-and-back climbs about 887 m to around 1184 m, and it feels every bit of its “difficult” rating. Expect around 5 hours on trail, with high effort and decent, but not life-changing, views of Vancouver, Grouse Mountain, and the North Shore peaks.

The lower section of the Cascades Trail and connecting routes can be confusing, with crisscrossing bike and hiking trails, so have a GPS map open from the start. Once you link onto Per/Ser Gynt and then Cascades, the line gets clearer but the terrain ramps up: long, steady gain, root tangles, loose rock, and some narrow sections with steep drops. Views from Mountain View, Senate Peak, and the big rock slabs near the summit give good sightlines toward downtown, the ski hills, and the surrounding ranges, though you’ll still be partly framed by trees.

Recent hikers report fallen trees, overgrown stretches, and some poorly marked forks, so expect slower going, especially on the descent. Early season often brings lingering snow above Cascades and around Senate Peak, and the trail can be muddy in spots with lots of bugs once things warm up. There’s basically one creek near the bottom and not much water after that, so carry extra, especially for dogs, and be ready for unstable footing and a few short cliff-side traverses. Best window for Mount Fromme via Cascades Trail is roughly April to October, with route-finding, bug spray, and good footwear all more important here than on many other North Vancouver hikes.
