Trail Description
Mount Burwell in North Vancouver is a serious grind and one of the bigger days you can do on the North Shore. The stats on paper say about 24 km and 1,471 m of gain, but most recent hikers are clocking closer to 28–35 km return depending on the start point, so plan for a long, punishing outing. The payoff is a high, open summit with wide views and a real backcountry feel, but this route is only for strong, experienced hikers.
The approach from Lynn Headwaters or via the Lower Seymour Conservation Area is classic North Shore: roots, mud, downed trees, and not much in the way of views until you’re high on the ridge. Once you hit Coliseum Mountain, the character changes and the traverse toward Mount Burwell is the fun part, with a small lake to cool off in, rocky glacial slabs, and a light, non-exposed scramble to the summit. From the top you get a full 360 of the North Shore peaks, with Coliseum below you and Cathedral Mountain looming to the north.
Right now, expect rugged, slow travel, some muddy stretches, and a trail that’s flagged but easy to underestimate in length. Start early, watch Lynn Headwaters park gate times, and bring more water than you think you need; the sun on the upper ridge can be harsh and there’s little shade. Most locals treat Mount Burwell as a big summer or early fall objective from North Vancouver, once snow is gone from the ridge and tarns are open, and many won’t rush to repeat it unless they’re training for bigger peaks like Cathedral, Harvey, or Brunswick.
