Trail Description
Mount Bishop in North Vancouver is one of those routes that quickly reminds you who’s boss. The stats you see online don’t tell the full story: hikers are consistently clocking around 13 km return from Seymour Dam with roughly 1300+ m of gain, and it feels every bit of it. This is an extreme, remote out-and-back that rewards strong, experienced hikers with huge views and almost no crowds.
The trail up Mount Bishop starts steep and pretty much stays that way, with a relentless grind through forest, rooty sections, and a long series of ropes and scrambles that demand hands-on climbing and solid footing. A small lake around 1000 m makes a great cool-down stop, and higher up you break out into open viewpoints with big looks over Seymour Reservoir, Indian Arm, and a full skyline of peaks like Cathedral, Tantalus, Sky Pilot, Garibaldi, and Robie Reid. It’s exposed in spots and not for anyone with a fear of heights or weak knees, but if you’re comfortable on technical terrain, the summit payoff is huge.
Recent hikers report lots of rope sections, overgrown brush that can shred bare arms, and a punishing descent that hammers tired legs, so bring gloves, trekking poles if you like them, and more water than you think you’ll need. Expect bugs in summer, berry bushes that can attract bears, and lingering snow above 1000 m well into July, though microspikes aren’t always essential if you’re confident on snow. The route from Seymour Dam is well flagged if you stay alert, but it’s remote, quiet, and serious mountain terrain, so download your map, start early, and treat Mount Bishop as a full-value North Vancouver sufferfest, not a casual outing.
