Trail Description

Hanes Valley Route in North Vancouver is one of those hikes that feels way more remote than it actually is. At 15.8 km with around 1,256 m of gain and a high point near 1,304 m, this point-to-point route from Lynn Headwaters to Grouse Mountain is a serious day out, not a casual stroll. Expect a tough, committing trip that can easily stretch beyond the “average” 5 hours for most people, especially with breaks and route-finding pauses.

The first half from Lynn Valley eases you in along Lynn Creek and past Norvan Falls before the character changes completely. Once you enter Hanes Valley proper, the crowds vanish and it turns into classic North Shore backcountry: creek crossings, a long boulder and scree field, and a relentless climb toward Crown Pass before dropping down toward the Grouse gondola. Views are more about rugged valley walls, rock, and feeling small in big terrain than big summit panoramas, though on a clear day you still get solid mountain and city glimpses near Grouse.

Recent hikers report the log and creek crossings can be sketchy and very slippery, especially after rain or when flow is high, so dry weather and good footwear matter. The boulder field is the crux: steep, loose in spots, fully exposed to the sun, and slow going with a pack, but well flagged if you pay attention and don’t blindly follow other parties. Expect bugs in summer, lingering snow patches near the top early in the season, and a long, rooty grind to finish that feels harder than it looks on the map. Plan on a full day, carry plenty of water and bug spray, and check Lynn Headwaters seasonal closures before committing to Hanes Valley Route.
