Trail Description
Dog Mountain and Mystery Lake Loop is one of those classic North Vancouver hikes that actually lives up to the hype. This 7.2 km loop from Mount Seymour delivers a steady moderate workout with about 324 m of gain, but the real payoff is the city and inlet views from Dog Mountain and the quiet little pocket of alpine scenery around Mystery Lake. Most people wrap it up in around two and a half to three hours, depending how long they linger at the viewpoints.
The loop itself feels more technical than tough: lots of rocks, roots, small stream crossings, and short ups and downs rather than one big climb. Going clockwise, you’ll hit Dog Mountain first for wide views over Vancouver, then carry on into quieter forest toward Mystery Lake, where the atmosphere shifts to calm water, surrounding hills, and a good snack spot. Despite the modest elevation of around 1,198 m, it has that “out of the city” feel almost as soon as you leave the parking lot.
Recent hikers report muddy, slick sections, especially on wet roots, and lingering snow patches near Mystery Lake at times, so waterproof hiking boots with decent ankle support are smart. Trails around Mystery Lake Loop can be confusing with multiple markers and junctions, so download a map and pay attention or you might end up back at the car early. Dog Mountain is usually busy while Mystery Lake is much quieter, bugs can be brutal in warmer months so bring spray, and this area sees regular bear activity, including moms with cubs, so carry bear spray, make noise, and check current Mount Seymour / North Vancouver advisories before you go.
